Literary Ashland with Sean McEnroe

Our September guest was Sean McEnroe, Associate Professor of History at Southern Oregon University. Sean is a historian of Latin America and the larger Atlantic World, specializing in religion, ideology, and state formation. He is the author of From Colony to Nationhood in Mexico: Laying the Foundations, 1560-1840, a work which describes the integration of European and indigenous governance, and the origins of Mexican citizenship. As an archival historian, McEnroe works in manuscript collections in Latin America, Europe, and the United States. His current project, entitled A Troubled Marriage: Indian and Mestizo Elites in the Age of European Empire explores the role of “civilized” Indians, that is, the elites of the peoples being conquered, and their interactions with the European colonizers.
